Abstract
Introduction: Career choice is one of the most important decisions a student or a professional has to make. Whether that decision is to select a specialization, organization or a profession, it should be made after careful consideration of the internal (including physical, emotional and intellectual demands) and external environment (which might include one’s suitability to the type of work). Aims & Objectives: To assess the Perception of first Year Students of a Dental College in Lucknow City (UP) towards Dentistry as Career Choice as well as to investigate factors that lead to the choice of dentistry as a career among fist year dental students in a dental college of Lucknow City. Materials & Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire study was conducted to assess perception of first Year Students of a Dental College in Lucknow City (U.P.) toward Dentistry as Career Choice. A pre-tested, closed ended and structured questionnaire in English language was used. The questionnaire was based on the previous review of literature. Results: The sample consisted of 57 first year BDS students of a Dental College in Lucknow city (UP) out of which 11 (19.3%) were males and 46(80.7%) were females. More than half of the subjects in all the groups were female. The results are presented in frequencies, percentages and mean±SD. The Chi-square test was used to compare categorical variables. Conclusion: The students have yet not been exposed to complex dentistry and hence their responses could be considered to be less influenced by the various positive or negative experiences of those students from higher academic years.
