Abstract
Schizophrenia is associated with a premature mortality gap of 15-20 years compared with that in the general population [1]. The rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD), coronary heart disease (CHD), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are at least two-fold higher in people with schizophrenia compared with the general population [[2]]. Despite the recognition of numerous promising findings in healthy populations and those with physical illnesses, there remains a paucity of robust controlled trials of HIIT in schizophrenia, or indeed any mental illness. Completion rates were relatively high (HIIT = 64%, CG = 78%), although do appear to be moderately lower than that reported in previous exercise interventions in schizophrenia whereby an average drop-out rate of 27% has been reported [16].
