Abstract
The article discusses the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the need to reduce inappropriate prescribing and dispensing of antibiotics to combat this issue. It highlights the high rates of dispensing antibiotics without a prescription, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and the urgent need to address this practice to reduce AMR. The role of community pharmacists as trusted sources of healthcare information is emphasized, especially in situations where it is challenging for patients to access primary care clinics. The article suggests that improving the knowledge and education of community pharmacists, along with providing evidence-based guidelines, can help promote appropriate management of self-limiting conditions and reduce the dispensing of antibiotics without a prescription. The importance of the WHO AWaRe antibiotic book and the need for ongoing research and monitoring in LMICs are also highlighted. [Extracted from the article]
