Abstract
The article presents the phenomenon of self-switching unidirectional distributed coupled waves (UDCWs) with variable coupling. It states that in certain conditions, a change in the input power of the waves will cause an acute change in the relation between the powers of the waves at the system output. It notes that the UDCWs are a whole class of waves in the optics such as the waves in the tunnel-coupled optical waveguides (TCOWs), and the waves of various polarizations in the birefringent.
