Abstract
Graphical abstract Highlights • Improvement of synthesis of cellulose esters in [Amim]Cl with supercritical CO 2. • Development of a kinetic model for cellulose acetylation in [Amim]Cl. • Quality of acetylation product tested by elemental analysis. Abstract New experiments of cellulose acetylation were performed using the ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Amim]Cl) as a solvent, at temperatures of 80, 60 and 40 °C. An attempt is done to improve the performance of the reaction by pressurizing the reaction with 80 bar of CO 2. The results indicate that scCO 2 speeds up the kinetics of the reaction probably due to a reduction of the viscosity of the ionic liquid, which favours diffusion of the reactants. Additionally, CHN elemental analysis revealed that cellulose acetate (CA) obtained with scCO 2 is of higher quality since it does not incorporate residues of the solvent. A kinetic model able to describe the reaction is proposed and kinetics parameters are adjusted. The model can fit experimental data from the literature obtained at different operation conditions, obtaining different kinetic constants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
