Abstract
With great sadness, we report that Robert (Bob) Keith Wayne, Distinguished Professor in UCLA's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on 26 December 2022. Bringing together a diverse assembly of scientists that spanned disciplines and continents, Bob and his colleagues synthesized molecular and morphological data to support recognition of the African golden wolf as distinct from the golden jackal ( I Canis aureus i ), a species with which the wolf had been confused for over 100 years (Koepfli et al., [6]). Bob and Blaire visited Yellowstone National Park (YNP) regularly to observe the world-famous reintroduced population of grey wolves founded between 1995 and 1997. Bob was first to discover that the endangered red wolf showed genetic variation that overlapped with coyotes, a related species with which red wolves readily interbreed. [Extracted from the article]
