Abstract
The article distinguishes a core recognition thesis from the more substantive content that the concept takes on once it becomes associated with an account of democratic legitimacy. This distinction is explored through critical interpretations of the approaches to recognition developed by Charles Taylor and Jürgen Habermas. The author suggests that each of these theorists develops a conception of democratic legitimacy that appeals ultimately to some immanent ideal of unity and consensus. Each therefore advances a vision of citizenship within which relations of recognition are entirely transparent and just. This dampens the critical thrust of the core recognition thesis that highlights the tentative and fragile nature of individual and collective identity constructions and the need to continually renegotiate these.
