Abstract
Sustainable issues in machining industry have influenced the growing interest on the development of environmentally friendly metalworking fluids, specifically vegetable-based oil. However, the lack of oxidative stability of the vegetable-based oil reduces its lubrication efficiency. Due to that issue, the use of modified vegetable oil with the addition of low quantity of solid lubricant additive has the potential to improve its lubrication and tribological performance. In this project, 0.05 wt. % of hBN particles was mixed with the modified jatropha-based oil denoted as MJO5a. The influence of hBN particles was evaluated through the steel turning process in terms of tool life and tool wear. MJO5a demonstrated excellent lubricating and tribological properties in reducing tool wear, thus prolonging the tool life. The performance of MJO5a outperformed the synthetic ester-based cutting fluid and therefore, is seen as a suitable sustainable metalworking fluid for machining processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
