Abstract
Doctors will encourage us to examine grossly abnormal signs in patients with huge tumours but will rarely support us in asking these patients about how they are coping with their diagnosis. It has long been acknowledged that doctors can often struggle to see past death being a failure of medicine.[1] We feel that this may have a subtle influence on the cases that doctors use to teach us, and therefore reduces our exposure to the dying patient. Some patients enjoyed being part of the learning exercise and found that it boosted their morale.[3] Such placements could help expose students to members of the multidisciplinary teams who care for these patients.
