Abstract
The article reports on the role of hypertension in the aetiology of vascular disease and the beneficial effects of antihypertensive treatment in preventing vascular events. The relationships between BP and cognitive function are important and the extent to which BP can be lowered for vascular risk reduction without accruing cognitive consequences, especially in older people and those with pre-existing moderate to severe cerebral small vessel disease must be determined in further studies.
