Abstract
Highlights from the article: Dhabhar ([6]) has proposed the concept of the "stress spectrum" to differentiate the beneficial effects of acute stress from the harmful effects of chronic stress. Frequent measurement of cortisol over a period of weeks may permit distinction between a subgroup of children who mount a transient cortisol response (acute stress) and those who do not (chronic stress), perhaps with quite different URI outcomes. Personal perception of stress as either a negative or a positive influence may be self-fulfilling on health outcomes (Keller et al., [16]) but the crucial link in the stress pathway which flicks the switch towards the "thrive" or "freeze" positions in individuals is totally unknown. His principal area of research, largely performed at the University of Bristol UK has been brain responses to stress and the consequences of stress to the immune system and disease.
