Abstract
The article discusses the observation of ionization patches in the polar cap ionosphere during a geomagnetic storm over the Northern Hemisphere convection zone using Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers and Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radar. Researchers looked at factors such as ionospheric plasma flow and density, entry and exit from polar caps, and transpolar evolution. It is suggested that the formation of gaps between ionization patches instead of a continuous "tongue" of ionization (TOI) is influenced by nightside reconnection in the magnetosphere.
