Abstract
This article explores the concept of quality improvement (QI) in gastroenterology and hepatology, aiming to enhance healthcare by making it safer, more effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, equitable, and sustainable. It distinguishes QI from research, emphasizing that QI focuses on improving existing systems rather than expanding generalizable knowledge. The article offers a step-by-step guide to creating a successful QI project, including problem identification, stakeholder involvement, progress measurement, and QI methodology selection. It also discusses the limitations and challenges of QI projects, providing recommendations for trainees. Additionally, the article includes three references related to quality improvement and patient safety projects in gastroenterology, offering guidance, tools, and strategies for incorporating these projects into training and getting started in quality improvement.
