Abstract
The article reports that Christian and Jewish tribunals had been allowed to settle family law disputes in Ontario since 1991. Traditional Muslim groups argued that they should also be allowed to solve the same type of disputes through use of sharia law. The decision of Premier Dalton McGuinty noted that secular authorities should handle all family law matters. Opponents of sharia law, many of them women's rights advocates, were pleased by the premier's decision.
