Abstract
The article focuses on Portuguese historian António Manuel Hespanha and work of Hespanha stood out exactly for insisting on the Law, never confused with the law or the norm written in Portuguese. It mentions relevance attributed to European "common law", that is, to the legacy of Roman law and its successive readings and reinterpretations. It also mentions repercussion of António Hespanha's work and activity in the Portuguese historiographical medium had very early expressions.
