Abstract
The article focuses on the efficiency and environmental benefits of the mass rapid transit (MRT). MRT is used to describe modes of urban transport both road and rail based. Several MRT systems including busways, tramways, light rapid transit and suburban rails can be categorized according to technology and degree of segregation from traffic. The performance of mass transit is usually measured by its passenger-handling capacity and speed of travel. Both indicators are intimately related to the design and operating practices adopted. severance, safety, noise and air pollution effects all warrant particular attention. Severance effects can be minimized, and safety enhanced, by suitable urban design and by the provision of adequate pedestrian crossing facilities. On-street noise and air pollution effects of busway transit can be minimized through the use of modern, liquid petroleum gas or compressed natural gas powered buses, or electric-powered trolleybuses.
