Abstract
This article provides a long-term follow-up of the PROTDILAT study, which compared the efficacy of endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) and self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) for the treatment of strictures in Crohn's disease (CD). The study found that EBD was more effective than SEMS in the short term, but the long-term effectiveness was similar between the two treatments. The majority of patients treated with EBD were able to avoid surgery and required fewer endoscopic treatments in the long term. Factors associated with a higher risk of surgery included non-intensification of therapy, treatment with SEMS, and a greater number of stents. Complications were more common in surgical treatment compared to endoscopic treatment. [Extracted from the article]
