Abstract
A report released by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) warns that revoking Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status for China would lead to massive inflation for American consumers. The report states that U.S. consumer purchasing power would decrease by $30 billion, resulting in 30% less purchases of smartphones and 26% less purchases of laptops and tablets. Increasing tariffs on products from China would cause prices to skyrocket and negatively impact American technology companies. The report estimates that prices for laptops and tablets would rise by 21.6%, smartphone prices would rise by 15.7%, and prices for monitors would rise by 11.7%. The CTA urges policymakers to consider the potential negative consequences before making any decisions. [Extracted from the article]
