Abstract
Keith Hart's essay "The Rise and Fall of National Capitalism" explores a wide range of topics, including money, the nation, and the tension between shareholder value and corporate social responsibility. The essay is part of Hart's larger project of synthesizing his past work and promoting a universalist, humanist perspective. Hart argues that the nation-state has acted as a stage manager for a phase of capitalism called "national capitalism," which is now coming to an end. He highlights the intensification of inequality, the rise of digital finance, and xenophobia as signs of this transition. Hart also discusses the role of money and its relationship to digital communications, emphasizing the materiality of the digital world. He concludes with a call for political action to address the challenges of the current moment. [Extracted from the article]
