Abstract
The article presents a study on water quality conditions in five coral reefs at the Marino Ballena National Park (MBNP) in Pacific Coast, Costa Rica including Roca Las Tres Hermanas, Bajo Las Tres Hermanas, and the western side of the tómbolo at Punta Uvita. It provides an analysis of the anthropogenic and natural processes that stimulate the development and deterioration of the coral reefs including nutrients enrichment, sedimentation, and temperature. It states that the degradation of MBNP's marine ecosystems was contributed by the sedimentation and eutrophication caused by the construction of coastal highways and El Niño in 1980. It suggests the need to address the problem to preserve persistence of coral reefs in MBNP.
