Abstract
The article focuses on the historical background of the 2002 West Coast port strike and negotiations, and on costs that were attributed to the strike. A discussion of a similar strike which is possible in 2008 if negotiations are not successful is presented. Preemptive action which can be taken to avoid a 2008 strike and variables and timing of the negotiations which could prevent a strike are discussed. The relationship between the Pacific Maritime Authority and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union is examined.
