Abstract
This scientific commentary discusses a study by Chu et al. that investigates the histopathology of individuals with mild motor deficits (MMD) prior to death. The study found that MMD cases had similar degrees of dopaminergic loss in the brain as individuals with Parkinson's disease, as well as pathological tau accumulation. The authors suggest that tau pathology may be more relevant than α-synuclein pathology in early Parkinson's disease. However, the study needs to be replicated in a larger cohort before it can be widely accepted. The commentary also raises questions about the role of pathology in neurodegenerative disorders and suggests that tau and other pathologies may be a protective response to various stressors. The authors propose that the current understanding of Parkinson's disease as a synucleinopathy should be reconsidered and that tau pathology may play a more central role. However, further research is needed to fully understand the implications of these findings. [Extracted from the article]
