Abstract
The article discusses whether light therapy is efficacious for treatment of mood disorders. English language randomized controlled trials of adults 18-65 years of age who had a diagnosis of mood disorder were in the acute phase of treatment. Bright light therapy reduces the severity of depressive symptoms more than placebo for seasonal affective disorder and non-seasonal depression. Dawn simulation reduces symptom severity for seasonal affective disorder. Bright light therapy as an adjunct to standard pharmacotherapy does not differ from placebo for non-seasonal depression.
