Abstract
Assesses the role of maternal viremia in vertical transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the extent to which viremia occurs during the various stages of pregnancy. Findings show that there is no consistent spread of HIV across the placenta during maternal viremia and indicate that in most cases transmission occurs close to or at delivery.
