Abstract
Sun, sand and grey hair-grass - Ecology of the Tree Grayling Hipparchia statilinus (Hufnagel, 1766. This study deals with the distribution, life cycle and habitat requirements of Hipparchia statilinus in Germany, taking into account the results of a two-year investigation of the oviposition sites in a nutrient-poor grassland in Upper Lusatia in Saxony (Germany). All oviposition sites of Hipparchia statilinus were characterized by open vegetation, containing mainly Corynephorus canescens as the most important host plant for the larvae, and a high proportion of bare ground partly covered with mosses. Nevertheless, in this very sparsely vegetated habitat the females preferred oviposition sites with a higher vegetation density compared to the surrounding conditions. These oviposition preferences are discussed in consideration of the habitat requirements of related Hipparchia species and possible conservation measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
