Abstract
The article reports on implementing an effective dyadic intervention to improve antiretroviral adherence for patients. Research on HIV/AIDS and other chronic conditions constantly showed that social support performs a vital role in promoting adherence. A description of the content, development and testing of the SMART Couples program, an antiretroviral intervention based in social action theory is given as well as a discussion of the challenges in translating findings into clinical practice.
