Abstract
The article discusses reading programs involving animals, mainly dogs, in animal-assisted literacy programs with children reading below their grade level. Various aspects of the programs are discussed, including the role of adults and constrained and unconstrained learning. Positive effects on the children include a calming effect, providing the children with a sense of responsibility, and increasing their ability to focus on reading.
