Abstract
This article, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, discusses a case study of a 76-year-old woman with COVID-19 who had replication-competent SARS-CoV-2 virus detected in her blood. The patient had a history of Turner syndrome, advanced dementia, and severe aortic stenosis. The study found that the virus was present in the patient's plasma, lung, heart, and other tissues, and was successfully isolated from the plasma using a modified Vero cell line. The findings suggest that replication-competent virus can circulate in the blood during COVID-19 and spread to various tissues in the body. Further research is needed to understand the implications of these findings for different populations, including those with SARS-CoV-2 variants, mild illness, recent vaccination, or waning immunity.
