Abstract
Plants can strongly influence the performance of subsequent conspecific and heterospecific plants either positively or negatively by conditioning soil abiotic and/or biotic properties via plant litter and root activity. Practical applications of plant-soil feedback Besides helping to understand plant community dynamics in natural ecosystems, knowledge about plant-soil feedback can be used for applied purposes (e.g., Mariotte et al. [23]). Next, using data from two previous plant-soil feedback studies, Rutten and Allan ([25]) demonstrated that their framework could substantially explain plant-soil feedback between species. Therefore, we advocate future studies to (re-) examine the influences of various external drivers on plant-soil feedback and their underlying processes, as well as experimentally validate novel methodological adaptations aiming to improve the estimation/prediction of plant-soil feedback effects.
