Abstract
Whilst this estimate is widely accepted, the burden of seizures in emergency care is less clear due to the large etiological variability and an abundance of differential diagnoses to acute seizures and impaired unconsciousness. The providers of emergency services to patients with acute seizure have to address simultaneously the patients' two major challenges on the scene: (i) identification of the potentially fatal seizure trigger and (ii) treatment of persistent seizures eventually progressing to status epilepticus. The Finnish public healthcare system manages the entire acute medical care at all levels resulting in comparable and consistent data on all levels of acute seizure care. [Extracted from the article]
