Abstract
Discusses an outbreak of pneumococcal meningitis (PM) in Salvador, Brazil, from 1995 through October 1998. Percentage of patients with penicillin-resistant isolates (PNI); Association of infection with these PNI with age, antibiotic use and resistance to a co-trimoxazole; Most prevalent serotype of PNI; Relation of a large proportion of cases of penicillin-resistant PM to a closely linked group of serotype 14 strains.
