Abstract
The article looks at the impact of technology and multitasking on children and their families. Families in the Los Angeles, California, area are participating in a study of modern family life, led by anthropologist Elinor Ochs, director of the Center on Everyday Lives of Families at the University of California. Ochs claims that multitasking gadgets such as iPods, instant messaging services, and cellular telephones are consequential for the structure of the family relationship. One survey found that a majority of seventh grade children use the Internet. The mental habit of dividing one's attention into many small slices has significant implications for the way young people learn, reason, socialize, do creative work and understand the world.
