Abstract
The article presents information on authentic assessment, which the author believes is missing from U.S. education. The author notes that the skills most wanted by employers are difficult to measure on standardized tests but can be observed and assessed through authentic assessment. Use of prior knowledge, recent learning, and relevant skills to solve realistic, complex problems is the definition of authentic assessment provided, and examples include senior projects involving research, community involvement, and an exhibit or presentation, or portfolios of student work demonstrating their achievement of learning standards. The author notes that use of authentic assessment would increase student engagement and prepare students to succeed in the work force.
