Abstract
The article discusses the use of educational technology to support a balanced literacy approach in U.S. schools for children with significant disabilities. It addresses the shortcomings of teaching sight words out of context, as well as notes classroom and Internet resources available to special education teachers. The authors comment on adapting literary materials, writing through the use of an alternative pencil, and meaningful word study. Tools suggested by the authors include interactive electronic books, word prediction computer software, and augmentative communication deceives.
