Abstract
The author reflects on data sources in medical research, particularly on large database studies. Other topics include the features of large databases such as generalized information like demographic characteristics and diagnostic codes, some large databases like the National Surgical Quality Improvement Project (NSQIP) and the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), as well as the main alternatives to said studies like the studies using electronic injury surveillance system data.
