Abstract
The article highlights the challenges in identifying compound earthquakes resulting from simultaneous ruptures of multiple fault zones due to the lack of historical benchmarks and dating uncertainties in geological records. It discusses a study in Puget Sound region of western Washington, USA, where dendrochronological analysis of earthquake-killed trees helped precisely determine the timing of an earthquake cluster approximately 1100 years ago, shedding light on the dynamics and seismic risks.
