Abstract
As such, Truitt's work is forging new ground for regional studies of Vietnamese Buddhism. Overall, Truitt's ethnography provides a necessary gap in research regarding Vietnamese Buddhism in America, and her thesis is that practitioners attend temples not only as "disciple Buddhists" (followers of a particular monk) but also as "compatriot Buddhists" (identifying as both Vietnamese and Buddhist) (148). Since 2013, anthropologist Allison J. Truitt has been studying Vietnamese Buddhism in the Gulf South, focusing on temple communities between southwestern Louisiana and Florida's Panhandle.
