Abstract
Monte Carlo codes GEANT 4 and MUSIC have been used to calculate background components of low-level HPGe gamma-ray spectrometers operating in a shallow underground laboratory. The simulated background gamma-ray spectra have been comparable with spectra measured at the Ogoya underground laboratory operating at the depth of 270 m w.e. (water equivalent). The Monte Carlo simulations have proved to be useful approach in estimation of background characteristics of HPGe spectrometers before their construction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
