Abstract
This joint statement discusses the devastating impact of the cholera epidemic in Haiti, particularly after the 2010 earthquake. It emphasizes the need for a comprehensive strategy to address cholera, including case finding and treatment, strengthening water and sanitation infrastructure, and linking prevention to care. The document provides information on the epidemiology of cholera in Haiti and the challenges of a comprehensive response. Efforts to provide safe drinking water have been made, but poor sanitation conditions could lead to further transmission. The lack of access to safe water and sanitation has contributed to the cycle of poverty and ill health in Haiti. Prevention measures include vaccination campaigns and improving water and sanitation systems, but there are challenges to implementation. The document calls for the Haitian government to lead the response and for long-term financial support. The authors support a comprehensive and integrated approach to eliminate cholera in Haiti.
