Abstract
This article presents letters written by eleven African American sailors from 1799 to 1814 as petitions to the federal government. William Godfrey informs the Congress about his detainment and being forced to serve the Mars warship of Great Britain. Elias Linch wrote to Colonel John Hawker to request for a clearance in Plymouth on February 19, 1810. David Smith also wrote to Hawker to ask for help on regaining his protection stolen by a pressgang in Liverpool, England.
