Abstract
This article, published in the journal Neuropediatrics, discusses the clinical and imaging features of children with autoimmune encephalitis (AE) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) antibodies. The study included 16 children who met the diagnostic criteria for possible AE and tested positive for GFAP antibodies in their serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid. The children presented with symptoms such as encephalopathy, headache, focal seizures, and ataxia. MRI imaging revealed abnormalities in 13 out of 16 children, including freckling lesions in the pons and nucleus caudate, signal abnormalities around the aqueduct, and myelin indicative of transverse myelitis. The study recommends including GFAP antibody testing in the work-up of children with suspected AE, particularly in cases involving brainstem involvement. [Extracted from the article]
