Abstract
Technical improvements and cumulative experience with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding have significantly reduced the rates of complications over the past decade, although complications can and do still occur. Reasons may vary, from problems with the device, to surgical technique or suboptimal band positioning, to patient nondherence or other behavioral issues. However, in many cases, issues can be managed and resolved, with the goal of enabling patients to avoid reoperation where possible, retain the band, and continue on to achieve successful weight loss. This article discusses identification and management of some of the complications that may lead to unsuccessful weight loss or other unsatisfactory outcomes, such as ongoing symptoms or unresolved comorbidities, following laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding procedures. Treatment algorithms for managing these complications are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
