Abstract
The article discusses the life works and legacy of Linda S. Birnbaum, the first woman and first toxicologist who directed the U.S. National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program (NTP). Topics discussed include advances made by the NIEHS in environmental health science under Birnbaum's leadership, her role in promoting research translation and knowledge dissemination, and her image as a proponent of employee engagement and green management.
