Abstract
The authors discuss a study which shows the significance of hippocampal neurons in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis recovery after stress. The authors argue with the study authors' concept that single episode of stress may trigger depression. They say that the evidence that the long-term decline in neurogenesis after HPA activation results in hippocampal atrophy in depression is weak.
