Abstract
In the last year's researchers have dedicated great attention to the development of bionanocomposites based on chitosan/montmorillonite incorporating essential oils or plants extracts, and the assessment of its performance as primary packaging, to evaluate their possible use as active or intelligent food packaging. The aim of this work was to compile the recent papers, regarding this subject. In the compiled studies different techniques of characterization of the films were applied to evaluate the mechanical, barrier and optical properties. A common conclusion is the fact that they are promising materials to be used as an alternative to the conventional packaging materials originating from fossil resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
