Abstract
Solar stills are one of the most cost-effective ways to provide drinking water from brackish water sources in arid areas. Engineers and researchers working in the fields of solar energy and allied fields have long been concerned with improving the structure of traditional solar stills in order to increase output. The scholars are motivated to undertake mathematical, experimental and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of solar stills to evaluate productivity due to the time-consuming and costly methods of solar still production. The latest experimental and numerical researches on various types of solar stills, such as single slope, double slope, multi-effect, tubular, and so on, are presented in this study. The review reveals that many more studies on CFD simulation of sun stills can be undertaken in the future, with various strategies such as nanotechnology, reflectors, storage materials, fans, and fins being examined for improving the efficiency of solar desalination systems.
