The article focuses on wars in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. The Islamic mujahedeen's full-scale assault on Jalalabad began on March 6, 1989 three weeks after the last Soviet soldiers left Afghanistan. Western journalists who have visited Jalalabad have reported on the devastation caused by mujahedeen rocket and mortar attacks. Some analysts have blamed the lack of unity of purpose and command among the mujahedeen. They have also pointed to such "mistakes" as the wholesale slaughter of prisoners and defectors, actions that have stiffened the resolve of the defenders.
