Abstract
Background: The lateral extracavitary approach is indicated for removal of extradural mass lesions anterior and/or lateral to the spinal cord or cauda equina, followed by vertebral fusion. Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of this procedure. Methods: This is an observational retrospective case series including 14 patients with anterior and/or lateral compression of the dorsal and/or lumbar spine. Pathologies include traumatic fractures, infections and epidural neoplastic pathologies. Decompression of the neural structures and excision of the pathological tissues followed by fusion were performed via the lateral extracavitary approach in all cases. Results: No added neurological deficits were encountered and all patients showed excellent outcome as regards pain and neurological function with an acceptable postoperative radiology. Conclusion: The lateral extracavitary approach is a safe and effective approach to the anterior and lateral dorsal and lumbar spine. However, longer follow up periods are needed to assess the long-term outcome and the occurrence of remote complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
