Abstract
The article discusses the study by K. A. Pratt and colleagues which shows that surface snow can be a source of bromine to the Arctic atmosphere. The researchers examined the potential for bromine production in several snow and ice substrates in experiments near Barrow, Alaska. Pratt and colleagues propose a chemical mechanism to explain their observations and suggest that light triggers the formation of hydroxyl radicals in the snowpack.
