Abstract
The article discusses the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) radiosonde program and its implications to the future of atmospheric monitoring in West Africa. It discusses the challenges for the monitoring and prediction of weather and climate in the region. An overview of AMMA objectives in relation to international and regional strategy, as well as the operational aspects of radiosoundings and pibal soundings in West Africa are offered. Furthermore, it gives several recommendations including the need for the regional management of the observing network, long-term cooperation with the European and U.S. partners for the training of staff and sorting of data transmission.
